Weekend in Cracow
Day 1. Transfer to Cracow. Evening walk to the old city.
• Transfer to the hotel in Cracow and accommodation.
• Information meeting with the Polish tour-leader.
• An evening walk to the old city followed by dinner and a concert of live folk music at a local traditional restaurant.
Day 2. Sightseeing. Trip to the Salt Mine in Wieliczka.
• After breakfast sightseeing of the highlights of Cracow – former capital of Poland, the city famous for its ancient monuments and the biggest medieval market square in Europe, the cultural center and heart of the state. The walking tour includes the major sights of this splendid city – Wawel Hill with a courtyard of the renaissance castle, gothic Royal Cathedral – place of coronation ceremonies of most of Polish kings and their last resting place, a walk along the Royal Route through the oldest streets of Cracow to its unforgettable Market Square with picturesque buildings of the Cloth Hall, and Town Hall, visit to St. Mary’s basilica which houses the extremely precious masterpiece of gothic sculpture – the biggest in Europe XV c. wooden altarpiece carved by Wit Stwosz, time to explore Collegium Maius – the first official seat of the oldest Polish university, established in XIV century.
• A lunch break in the city centre.
• Trip to the Wieliczka Salt Mine – the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The unique character and the beauty of the mine was created by nature about twenty million years ago. It has been operating for more than 700 years and is one of the oldest mining constructions in Europe. The guided tour takes more than 2 hours and leads through underground amazing caverns, chapels with reach decorations and salt lakes. The biggest chamber and the greatest achievement of self-taught sculptors is the graceful chapel of St. Kinga, carved 101 meters under the surface – the only underground church of Poland.
• After the tour dinner at a local restaurant.
Day 3. Departure to Auschwitz Birkenau Museum. An evening visit to Kazimierz.
• Half a day excursion to Auschwitz and Birkenau – the biggest Nazi death camps in Europe established in 1940, the instruments of terror and extermination of Jews, Poles, Gypsies and other people of 27 different nationalities. The camps provide the most chilling reminders of the Nazi atrocities. During a guided tour you enter barracks, where prisoners use to live, roll-call square, camp prison with an execution wall, the only preserved gas chamber and the crematorium and the ruins of four more.
• Return to Cracow in the afternoon.
• An evening visit to Kazimierz – former Jewish town which was established in XIV century and inhabited by Jews at the end of XV. Shortly it became one of the most important Jewish centers in this part of Europe, famous of high level of education and culture. It is still the most original part of Cracow with synagogues, old cemeteries, Jewish shops and special atmosphere.
• After a short walk we take you to the dinner with Jewish dishes accompanied by a concert of Klezmer music.
Day 4.
• After breakfast transfer to the airport or railway station.
